VIDEO PROFESSOR ENCOURAGES CONSUMERS TO
REMAIN VIGILANT AGAINST COMPUTER ID THEFT (Lakewood CO)
John Scherer, CEO and founder of VIDEO PROFESSOR Inc urges consumers to remain on guard against Identity Theft by crooks hacking into your computer.
"I'm going to stay firmly on my soap box on the issue of Identity Theft," says Scherer. "I was a victim myself."
A new report issued by the Better Business Bureau, the 2005 Identity Theft Fraud Survey Report indicates that the more serious ID Theft threat comes from off-line sources, rather than on-line.
"I applaud the BBB for conducting this research," says Scherer. "I think we all agree that ID Theft remains a serious threat to all Americans irregardless of how it happens. Again, being a victim of ID Theft myself, I know full well the time and expense and effort involved in getting one's financial affairs back in order."
The BBB report, says Internet-related fraud problems are actually less severe and less costly than previously thought. According to just published report, computer crimes account for 11.6 percent of ID Theft.
"The good news," says Scherer, "is that people are becoming more and more aware of how vulnerable their computers can be. It's obvious they're taking the important preventive measures to protect their computers from hackers. It's why we launched the new section on our own page (www.videoprofessor.com) with free tips to consumers on ID Theft and how to protect yourself. We also developed an ID Theft Pack, which includes critical firewall and virus protection, plus also the tutorial instruction on how to maximize its effectiveness.
"But the bad news," worries Scherer "is that people might now tend to let down their guard. In a nation of over 260-million people, 11.6 percent is a heck of a number. And a heck of a lot of money for hackers to steal."
Scherer says he agrees with the key findings of the BBB report, especially the seriousness of the crime and that all consumers need to stay focused on protecting their personal information whether they transact business on-line or off-line.
"We're gratified at the attention being paid to this most seriousness of crimes," says Scherer. "Reports like that issued by the BBB, the increased awareness of law enforcement and the attention it's getting from the news media are good for consumers everywhere. But every time I read or see a story about yet another victim I remember from my own personal experience exactly what they're going through."
